  1. Celebrating 20 Years of the Telugu School of Edmonton

The Telugu School of Edmonton has spent the last 20 years teaching Telugu and keeping our culture and heritage close for the next generation.

Under Principal Praveen Baradi, Vivek Vemula, and a team of enthusiastic volunteer teachers, the school was reinstated in 2005 by members of the Andhra Cultural Association, starting again with 15 students on Sankranti day. Today it teaches more than 80 students, ages 4 to 14, across six grade levels — in person, and since 2020, online as well — with 15 volunteer teachers.

Classes run every Saturday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm at Alberta Hindi Parishad, followed by half an hour of assembly where students share stories, recite poems, and speak about Telugu culture. Students also take part in Astaavadanamu, Yekapatraabinayanamu, Ganesha idol making, muggu (rangoli) competitions, and devotional singing at the Bhakta Ramadasu and Annamacharya aradhana. The school has been a member of the International Heritage Language Association since 2007–08.

Thank you to every volunteer teacher and every family who has shown up on a Saturday afternoon — here's to many more years of growing Telugu in Edmonton.
